D I M E N S I O N – POP-UP CONFEDERATION OF ARTISTS01.10.2016 - 06.11.2016
Exhibition by 131 artists in The Library Hall 1 October – 6 November 2016.
The idea of the exhibition is to present the work of a POP-UP confederation of established, professional artists from Denmark’s southern islands and the metropolitan area, who will be temporarily involved in a new, conceptual, collaborative project for an exhibition.
The basis of this new confederation of artists is two art collections of works by artists who were active in the 1930s and 1940s, both in Copenhagen and Denmark’s southern Islands, in a number of different artists’ associations and groups.
The artists of the southern islands made their début in the early 1930s at the Artists’ Autumn Exhibition and went on to have permanent exhibitions in Copenhagen: for example, at the Charlottenborg Spring and Autumn Exhibitions. The catalogue for the 1947/48 Charlottenborg Exhibition of Artists from Denmark’s Southern Islands had an introduction by Olaf Rude.
Acclaimed artists of today engage in dialogue with an art collection from the 1930s and create a new DIMENSION
131 artists from current and former confederations/groups of artists have been invited to be part of a POP-UP confederation of artists, entitled DIMENSION, in the Library Hall of Copenhagen’s Round Tower. Here they will encounter an exhibition of 150 works from the art collections, ‘Painters of the 1930s-1940s from Denmark’s Southern Islands’.
Each member of the ‘DIMENSION Confederation of Artists’ will choose a work from the art collections and then create his or her own work on the basis of the chosen work’s DIMENSION.
The word “DIMENSION” can be interpreted as: size, time, place, aspect and vertical/horizontal historical perspective. This paves the way for an open-ended, visual artistic journey in DIMENSION. The working method is entirely up to each individual artist. Each artist will add his or her own work to the exhibition during the exhibition’s run. In other words, the construction of the DIMENSION exhibition will be an on-going process. Every day, something new will be created at the exhibition.
The exhibition is supported by the Guldborgsund Visual Arts Council and the Copenhagen Visual Arts Committee and Culturalfund.
