NEWAFRICA
design at the cutting edge
NEWAFRICA
is presented
by Solvgade Studio in collaboration with Danish Museum of
Art and Design and Index Design Awards.
The exhibition brings into focus the new design that has
emerged from the fertile political and economic climate in
South Africa during the past decade, as well as other hot
spots and great designers throughout Africa; Burkina Faso,
Mali, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Cameroon and Togo.
The contemporary African design reflects the African
aesthetic tradition of sensuous suppleness, gravity,
ornamentation and saturation of colour, as well as the
cultivation of European and Asian influences.
The objective of interest will be designers with a strong
vision and a contemporary response to African as well as
global challenges of today.
Another theme is social and political aspects in design,
empowerment of rural women and associated projects. Some of
the most interesting designs originated as community
projects, in witch designers has collaborated with arts and
craftsmen, resulting in successful products.
“Collectivity is an African concept” as Maira Koutsoudakis,
one of SA’ s upcoming designers, explains.
