PAINTSPACE VIII –
CONTEMPORARY PAINTING
4
April – 10 May
The people behind the Phoenix Revisited anniversary
exhibition are now looking ahead in the PAINTSPACE VIII –
CONTEMPORARY PAINTING exhibition in Rundetaarn. Painting has
recently undergone one of the periods which appears to be a
regular part of the medium’s Phoenix-like death and
resurrection cycle. During economic boom times, painting
(which has been declared dead countless times throughout the
twentieth century) bounces back for yet another commercial
rampage. Now the crisis has hit, it is time for an overhaul
– hence PAINTSPACE VIII.
A broad array of Danish artists
The name of the exhibition comes from the mortally departed
Phoenix exhibition venue which hosted seven PAINTSPACE
exhibitions during the 90’s. The original exhibition mixed
painters of different generations and styles with a free
hand and cocksure style. From young to old, abstract to
still life. This exhibition will take up the challenge again
and present a broad array of Danish artists. Some were
around in the late 90’s when the original exhibition flew
the flag for painters, others are young, unwritten pages.
Buccaneers, deserters and lost-cause fighters
The organisers of the PAINTSPACE VIII exhibition are going
beyond mainstream. Access is not limited to the old guard,
buccaneers, deserters and fighters for lost causes have also
been invited. Alongside well-known artists such as Peter
Land, Simone Aaberg Kærn and Kristian Devantier, PAINTSPACE
VIII will present Kim Bjørnholt, Mini Blume, Maibritt
Ulvedal Bjelke, Bertil Skov Jørgensen and the best (and most
overlooked) colourful painter of the eighties, Berit
Heggenhougen Jensen. |
