Once
they were all young rebels on their way into a time filled with new
artistic experiments, a struggle against the Academy and old traditions.

Gay
Christensen: Woodcut.
At that time, in 1959,
there were scarcely 10 painters with a clear artistic line, which went
against the lyrical abstract.
|
Today, there are 20 very
different artists, and Markan Christensen is the only one who has been a
member since 1959. The group is still courting the abstract in wood
engravings, sculptures, paintings, mosaics, fragments, ceramics, and
picture tapestries, but they also make room for surreal and figurative
works.

Normally, the group
exhibits its work in the exhibition building of “Den Frie”, but this
year the artists are moving to the
Round Tower with approximately 40 brand-new oeuvres, which will all be displayed in
the big, bright library in the tower.
 Mogens
Phølsgaard: Ravnelys
“It
is an amazing room,” the chairman of M-59, Gay Christensen, says.
“It invites new experiments and expressions, which might lead M-59 in
a new direction.”
