Paper Parade
21 + 1 Danish paper artists exhibiting at the Round Tower.
18 June-10 August 2003

"The texture and naturalness of paper bring new dimensions to both pictures and sculptures. Paper is a humble material capable of moving the spectator without any violent effects, whether by itself or used with other materials."

("Sten&Papir")

Ida Guldhammer A long time ago among Chinese mountains and valleys, papermaking was allegedly invented by the eunuch T'sai Lun. His invention remained a Chinese secret for several centuries before spreading to Vietnam, Tibet, Korea and Japan. In the year 751 the Arabs were fighting against the Chinese Tang Dynasty northeast of Samarkand. After having won the battle the Muslim warriors abducted a Chinese caravan with a group of paper makers in it. It did not take long before the Arabs had wrested the secret formula from the Chinese, and Samarkand soon became a flourishing centre for paper production. The Moors from North Africa later introduced papermaking into Europe, and by the 15th century papyrus and parchment paper had largely been superseded by paper throughout the continent.

Paper art has developed substantially as an art form over the past 20-30 years. You can cut, draw, paint, rip, knead or fold paper—there are practically no limits. In Denmark there are actually a fair amount of paper artists, but only few of them are visible to the public. In order to show the plenitude of Danish paper art, the artist group Sten & Papir has therefore gathered 22 paper artists to exhibit at this summer's paper art exhibition at the Round Tower.

Today paper artists across the world have joint forces in IAPMA (International Paper Artist Federation). Exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world show that paper art is a multi-faceted art form. Time after time you are amazed by the qualities of transformation and variety inherent in paper. It is a fascinating material, which really deserves to be spotlighted.
